I was filming the aircraft’s blind owner for a DVD series my employer at the time was producing, and all I wanted to do was sleep until the flight was over. I couldn’t. Obviously.

I had to keep working as my stomach heaved, shooting as best I could given the aircraft’s erratic motion and fighting the urge to pass out as the blind pilot calmly complained that his homemade artificial horizon (a small plastic box of electronics with a raised line representing the horizon on a ping pong ball) wasn’t working correctly.

What I love about what I do are the unexpected places where I find myself, the people I meet, the things I learn and the creative problems I have to solve, not to mention that I love telling stories.

Since I transitioned into becoming a freelance motion designer, editor and occasional producer back in 2011, I haven’t had to face my mortality as I did in that aircraft, but boy, I’ve worked on some exciting s***, with some fantastic and talented folk.

Unfortunately, the more interesting and most recent ones are covered by NDAs, but how I got that work was random and unexpected … I had produced some animations for a local amateur dramatics society’s annual pantomime (Peter Pan), and the mother of one of the children in the pantomime that year also happened to be a creative director in a global events agency.

See? Unexpected. I love that.

When I’m not working, I’m into film, reading, nutrition, weight training, getting out in the fields, and gaming, and I have an ongoing personal project called DexAboutWalden, a silly website and zine (available on Etsy) about my hometown of Saffron Walden. It’s absurd and rude. I also put silly posters up on the public noticeboard. They brighten people’s day.
